Unity attracts me because it has no dogma. You do not have to believe anyone's version of spirituality except what you wish to choose. The founders of Unity, Myrtle and Charles Fillmore, felt it was important to tell people that they where not founding a religion but gathering truth seekers to improve the world. Some might say, “Wait what about the Unity Principles? Isn't that dogma?” In exploring that you will see that the Unity Principles change from each Unity Center or Unity Church throughout the world. In Lee Summit, Missouri the principles read like this: There is only one Presence and one Power active as the Universe and in my life. God the Good. Our essence is of God; therefore we are inherently good. This God essence was fully expressed in Jesus, the Christ.
We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in Mind. Through prayer and meditation, we align our heart-mind with God. Denials and affirmations are tools we use. Through thoughts, words, and actions, we live the Truth we know.
In the Unity Spiritual Center in Bellingham the principles read like this:
God is good and present in all things.
The holiness of God is my own true nature. I am creating my experiences by how I think. My thinking is guided by my daily affirmative prayers and affirmative actions. I follow and am sustained by these values in every way, every day.
In the Lynnwood Unity Church they read like this:
God is good and active in everything, everywhere. I am naturally good because God's Divinity is in me and in everyone. I create my experiences by what I choose to think, what I feel, and what I believe. Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I recognize God and bring out the good in my life. I do and give my best by Living the Truth I know.
I make a difference.
The idea that we are good and are co-creating our lives by how we think, feel, and act is basic to all the different versions of the Unity principles. All the positive things we do and think make our lives better and in turn the world around us a better place. Unity principles say that you have the ability to create what you want in this life. Jesus said, “ The Kingdom of Heaven is within you.” He recognized that everything you do has an affect on you and all life around you.. Mockingbird says it amazingly well when they sing “Everything is Possible”.
The chorus of the song is "The only measure of your words and your deeds is the love you leave behind when you are gone.” If you are co-creating your reality with the Universe would you not want it to be a loving one?
Go forth an spread love and kindness.
