“People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of their character.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Humans sometimes spend lots of their energy claiming that they not are part of the Universe. They feel that they must raise the human species above the rest of the creatures on the Earth and in the Universe. We are a strange species in that we invent reasons that we are different in a special way.
In early history humans felt they were special because they were the only creatures to have gods to pray to. The rest of life on Earth just went on living their lives without having gods to help them.
Someone came up with the brilliant idea that humans were special because they made and used tools. Soon it was discovered that many animals made and used tools, even birds!
We must be special because we have bigger, more complex brains. Turns out that is not true either. Whales and dolphins out do us in in that department. So did the Neanderthals. Well we only use part of our brains so we are smarter. Turns out that is a urban legend also, as we mapped our brains we discovered that we use almost all of it.
“Well humans are the only animal who manipulate our environment!” What about beavers, bears. birds, chimps, etc.
Reading this you might think I am putting humans as down a species in some way. I am not, some of my best friends are humans and I am also just a human. I know that I am a very small part of a large Universe. I also know that all my actions have consequences good and bad. As I create my reality I must be mindful of how I react and act. I believe that we are accountable for the things we leave in our wake as we travel down the river to the sea.
“Goodness is the only investment that never fails.” H. D. Thoreau
